After a very long wait, Restylane was approved by the FDA in 2004. As you know, I had decided to wait for FDA approval to ensure proper testing and safety for my patients. I have now been using it since January 2004 with great results.
Restylane is a microbiologically engineered hyaluronic acid derivative. This is a non-animal product. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally found substance in our normal skin. My patients are uniformly very happy with this filler. Many people have switched over to Restylane from other fillers and many people have tried it who never had injections with other fillers before. As compared to other previously available filling agents, Restylane seems to be more naturally and softer looking. It typically lasts 6-8 months, and in some people, even longer. Because it is a gel, it can be massaged after the injection to form it to the precise shape and location desired. It can be used in the naso-labial folds, lines around the mouth and lower face, lips and even in some lines in the upper face. Most of our patients are treated after using only a topical numbing agent. However, some people do prefer anesthetic injections. We are now using the new, more cost effective
syringes. Side effects include mild swelling, which may last a few days. Occasionally, a small bruise may form, which can last up to one week. If you have any questions, feel free to call the office.
